Real Dads Network to present amazing fathers with awards for being superheroes

Week-long celebration taking place June 5th to 12th and will honor black fatherhood

June 2nd, 2021 – New York City, NY – Real Dads Week 2021 will celebrate black fatherhood from June 5 to June 12. The events will take place virtually, with the exception of the family hike. Real Dads Week will feature a variety of guests during the week-long celebration and will attract people from all over the country. It will also lead up to Father’s Day on June 20.

The event is hosted by Real Dads Network, an organization that aims to create a culture where all fathers are actively involved in the parenting process and are portrayed and viewed as exemplary role models by society. The organization holds weekly father sessions to educate individuals on how to strengthen their relationships with their children.

Well-known comedian Talent will host the Real Dads Award and Scholarship on day one. The Read Dads Award and Scholarship will be held via Zoom, with Superhero awards given out to some amazing fathers. Awards will be given out to:

  • Media Award: Craig Melvin, News Anchor on NBC’s Today 
  • Lifetime Activist Award: Abiodun Oyewole, The Last Poets
  • Image Award: Dondre’ Whitfield, Actor, Author, and Activist
  • Legacy Award: Shawn Porter, former Two -time Welterweight Boxing Champion
  • Community Father: Don Felder, New Jersey Businessman, and philanthropist 

The Award and Scholarship ceremony will also present one inspiring young male with the Real Dad Network’s $1,000 Academic Scholarship prize.

Real Dads Week of events will continue on June 8 with “A Father’s Worth in Words – A Tribute to Black Fathers” in collaboration with Nuyorican Poets Cafe. Music artist Wé McDonald will be the special guest on day two. The third day of the event will debut the “Expression of Black Fatherhood” exhibit. On the fourth day, Devon Bandison, author of Fatherhood is Leadership, will lead dads in discussion during the Real Dads Club meeting. Real Dads Week will finish on June 12 with the Fathers and Family Hike. The hike will take place at Bear Mountain State Park at 9:30 am, with families gathering to trek the incredible outdoor area.
