Dorchester, MA – August 27, 2020 – Music and the Black civil rights movement have gone hand in hand for centuries. From spirituals sung in the 1800’s to Nina Simon’s Mississippi Goddam to Bob Marley’s Get Up Stand Up, the musical message of Black equality and Black rights spans time, genre and history. Now, acclaimed activist, rap and hip hop performer, Bryanne Toney, also known as, BT the Artist, is adding his inspirational and power voice to those advocating for Black rights and the fight for reparations.

BT the Artist’s new single, Change, is a lengthy protest song whose launch was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and the historic need to address the damage caused by injustice. The song is segmented into various parts that together speak to the need for change. The soft, melodic beginning with its chorus of “I’ve been looking for change. I’ve been struggling. What’s it going to cost me,” speaks to the fact that many are still paying the ultimate price in the quest for justice and equal rights. The melodic beginning dives into a powerful spoken word monologue detailing the struggle of minorities in America, from Native-Americans to today’s Black Lives Matter movement. BT the Artist ‘s particular focus on the inequalities currently faced by Black Americans includes undereducation, systematic inequality and a lack of political representation. The spoken word lyrics pay particular attention to the movement for reparation of historic injustices. The finale of the lyrics is a plea for the listener to research the reparation movement. The song then culminated in a classical music accompaniment to a female spoken word poet sharing a powerful message about the need to rebuild Black American culture.

“There is a long history in America of musicians being activists,” explains BT the Artist. “In my mind, music and activism are one in the same. When a rap artist sings about his personal struggles, those struggles often have roots in inequality. The single, Change, as with my previous albums, is deeply personal and based in my experience of inequality, but it is meant to speak to the larger, community-wide struggle we have experienced and to demand change. The single is modern and easy to listen to thanks to its emotive hip hop beats, but the true power of the song is in the inspiring lyrics.

BT the Artist’s latest single, Change, will be launched on September 11, 2020 and will be available for download on Apple Music, Tidal and Spotify.
